Why does Cunningham require background checks and fingerprinting for some volunteers?
Cunningham serves youth in care, and their safety is our top priority. Any volunteer who works directly with youth or clients is required to complete a DCFS background check and fingerprinting process. This requirement helps ensure a safe, supportive environment for every young person in our care.
Our team will guide you through each step and answer any questions along the way.

What counts as “working directly with youth”?
– Working directly with youth includes activities such as:
– Leading or assisting with youth activities (games, open gym, mentoring, tutoring, groups)
– Supporting youth events or on-campus programming where you interact with youth
– Any ongoing or scheduled role that includes direct engagement with youth

These roles require DCFS background check, fingerprinting, and orientation.

How much time do I need to commit?
Opportunities vary. Some roles are one-time events or short-term projects, while others are ongoing. When you complete the Volunteer Interest Form, you can share your availability and preferences, and we will match you with opportunities that fit your schedule.

Can groups or companies volunteer together?
Yes. We welcome groups from businesses, faith communities, schools, and community organizations. Group projects are a great way to build connection while supporting Cunningham’s mission. We can help identify projects that fit your group’s size, interests, and time frame.

Will I receive training or guidance?
Yes. All volunteers receive guidance on expectations, safety, and best practices. Volunteers working directly with youth receive additional training and orientation.
