Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” These words come to life in Trace’s story—a journey of service that began with four small bags of toys and has grown into a thriving holiday tradition that touches countless Cunningham kids.
Trace first heard about Cunningham in high school. His brother-in-law shared stories of children who might otherwise miss out on holiday joy, sparking a desire in Trace to make a difference. It wasn’t until college, however, that he took action. His first effort was modest: a handful of toys tucked away until delivery day. “I didn’t think of it as a big deal. It was just something you do because you should,” Trace reflected.
That simple act of kindness has since flourished into a major holiday project, marking six years of fulfilling special wishes during the Christmas season. For the past five years, the Champaign-Urbana Junior Chamber Jaycees have partnered with Trace, transforming his initiative into a community-wide effort. Today, the toy drive spans five drop-off locations, with options for direct monetary donations matched by the Jaycees Foundation up to $500.
“There’s something magical about picking out gifts that you know will brighten a child’s Christmas morning,” said Erin, a Jaycee member. “It’s not just shopping; it’s delivering hope and joy.”
For Trace, this is the heart of service—building hope through collective action. “The impact is amazing when I think about it,” he said. “But really, this is just what you do when you care about your community.”
In Trace’s journey, Dr. King’s vision of service becomes tangible—a reminder that small, grace-filled acts can inspire lasting change.
