Our sensory spaces are used daily, and they need care to stay effective. That’s why we’ve launched “Sensory Spaces, Hopeful Faces” — a campaign to improve these vital environments. Funds will go toward better lighting, sound and updated tools for our youth.
Let us tell you about 10-year-old Ace. He’s one of the first up each morning, full of energy and big emotions — a common challenge for kids who’ve experienced trauma. Mornings are tough, and he often wakes others with his noise and movement.
At Cunningham, we don’t just react — we teach. That’s why we bring Ace to the sensory room. There, he jumps on the crash pad, shoots hoops and listens to music. These tools help him calm down and get ready to learn. Now, Ace asks to go because the sensory room has become something steady and safe in his life. And he’s not alone. Most of our kids use these rooms regularly, because sensory support helps them build critical skills, reduce stress and regulate emotions.
The trauma our youth, like Ace, have experienced changes how their brain and body work, making it harder for them to stay calm and handle sensory input in a typical way. Some of our kids become extra alert and react too strongly to things like sounds or lights. Engaging in sensory activities in an appropriate setting helps them develop important skills—like coordination, speech and confidence. Such activities support focus, reduce stress and help our kids shift from feeling overwhelmed to feeling ready to learn and connect with others.
