A bright return

Petey's growth makes him a bright light for his classmates, teachers and school staff.

At Cunningham, no step forward is too small to celebrate. Every bit of progress our kids make is a reason for hope. And Petey’s* journey is one we wanted to share.

Petey first attended CIRCLE Academy Vermilion (CAV) several years ago, but left when he moved away to live with his mother. He returned to CAV this year and has shown remarkable growth! Ms. Elena,* who has worked with Petey in several settings over the years and was a source of familiarity for him, has seen his progress firsthand.

“I am so amazed by Petey’s growth,” Ms. Elena said. “In August, he was exhibiting many challenging behaviors due to the stress of a new school, new teachers, new peers and new routines. Now, we do not see any such behaviors at all with him.”

Academically, his progress has been just as impressive. At the beginning of the school year, Petey was only tracing his name and recognized just a few letters. Now, he independently writes his first and last name, forms sentences and participates in math alongside his peers—counting to 50 and working through lessons on the IXL math program.
Beyond academics, Petey has also blossomed socially. He interacts with staff and other students in the hallways, cafeteria and throughout the school.

“Petey’s classmates genuinely enjoy having him in class and always include him,” Ms. Elena said. “He is such a bright light for the staff and students.”

With the support we receive for the work we do at Cunningham, progress becomes possible—and breakthroughs happen every day.
